Recovery to Legacy

The David Recovery Method · Fifteen weeks · Five stages

You’ve been carrying it well. That was never the same as putting it down.

From Recovery to Legacy is a structured fifteen-week programme for anyone carrying profound grief who has decided to stop carrying it the same way.

The real problem

Functioning is not recovery.

People say you’re doing remarkably well, and you are — remarkably well at managing. But managing a weight and putting it down are two different operations. One keeps everything stable. The other actually changes something.

Grief carried badly has two faces. One pours everything into competence so the weight stays hidden. The other lets life quietly shrink so the pain cannot reach. Same conclusion underneath both: nothing I do touches this. That conclusion is the problem. And it is trainable.

Why it has not held

You have been starting at the site with a shovel and no drawing.

You did rebuild. A new routine, a new role, perhaps a new house. And six months later you were back in the same interior place — not because you lacked discipline, but because the outside changed while the inside stayed the same.

There is an order to how anything gets built: you see it, then you draw it, then you build it. This programme is the drawing office — and then the site, with the first walls built while you are still inside the container.

The fifteen weeks

Five stages. Here is what changes.

One 60-minute live session opens each stage, followed by two guided weeks of practice and integration. The Six Dials are read at the close of every stage.

01
Weeks 1–3

Egg · Face It

Stage artefact: The Grief DNA Profile — six archetypes, seven dimensions

  • The weight gets a name and a number. You say the plain version out loud, and you do not come apart.
  • You see, itemised, what the carrying has been costing you.
  • Your grief pattern is named. It is not a character flaw.

By the end: relief, clarity, recognised.

02
Weeks 4–6

Caterpillar · Feel It

Stage artefact: The Lament — address, complaint, petition, trust

  • The core lesson: helplessness is the default and control is learned, so what has kept you stuck is trainable.
  • You feel it fully, within a set start and a set stop. When the time is up, you are still here.
  • You write your first lament, following a structure, and read it aloud.

By the end: evidence, in your own numbers, that the load moved.

03
Weeks 7–9

Chrysalis · Forge It, part one

Stage artefact: The Strengthening Protocol — in your own handwriting

  • From outside, this stage looks like nothing is happening. Inside, everything is reorganising. You learn to tell the difference.
  • You build a set place and routine for hard days, and a plan for when the next wave comes.
  • You begin telling people you trust how you feel, without shame.

By the end: a practice that has already carried you through one hard day.

04
Weeks 10–12

Emergence · Forge It, part two

Stage artefact: The Four-Pass Drawing Method — yours to use for life

  • You draw your Ideal Self in detail — then your Ideal Life, Ideal Career and Ideal Future.
  • You build the first wall from each drawing while you still have the room and the cohort around you.
  • You go back into the one area you have been avoiding.

By the end: oriented, capable, and a quiet new confidence.

05
Weeks 13–15

Flight · What Remains

Stage artefact: The Legacy Charter — your next season, in your own words

  • What you lost is given a place in what you are building.
  • You make a plan for the day the old pattern returns, so you know exactly what to do.
  • You open the sentence you sealed in Week 1, and hear yourself described in words you would never have chosen.

By the end: not improved — recognised.

The framework beneath the work

The David Recovery Method

Built by a Chartered Psychologist on the record of King David — thirteen documented episodes of grief and the recurring moves he made to come back — mapped against contemporary psychology of learned control. Researched and built from first principles, not adapted from a generic grief model.

01

Face It

Name it accurately. Precision is the first relief.

02

Feel It

Contained, not collapsed. Structure is what makes it safe.

03

Forge It

Stabilise, draw who you are on the other side, then build.

04

What Remains

Carry it differently, with what you lost given a place.

Progress is measured, not guessed. The Grief DNA Assessment is taken before the fifteen weeks and again after, and the Six Dials — Carrying Load, Suppression, Connection, Function, Meaning, Bond — are read at the close of every stage. You see the change in your own numbers.

Who this room is for

Anyone carrying profound grief.

This is for you if

  • You lost someone, or something that held your identity — a partner, a parent, a child, a role, a marriage.
  • You function. Possibly very well. Possibly too well.
  • You have tried to rebuild at least once, and it reverted.
  • You can give twenty to thirty minutes a day, and one evening every three weeks, and you are willing to write.

This is not for you if

  • The loss is very recent — within the last few weeks. The screening conversation will say so kindly and point you to the right support.
  • You are in crisis right now. This is a working programme, not a place that can carry a crisis.

  4. The Six Dials, measured at the start and the close of every stage.
  5. The participant workbook, built stage by stage.

Who is leading the room

Dr Ezi Az’Fredrick

CPsycholAFBPsSTeaching since 2010

Chartered Psychologist with a PhD in Counselling Psychology, and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. International Affiliate of the American Psychological Association and a member of the BPS Division of Coaching Psychology.

A senior academic teaching the psychology of human development across the lifespan since 2010, she has published on locus of control and learned helplessness — the research foundation beneath the method’s core lesson.

She built the David Recovery Method on her own grief first. Practitioner, scholar, and someone who has carried grief herself — all three at once. Which is rather the point.

Before you reserve

The questions people ask

Is this counselling or treatment?

No. This is a structured, educational and coaching-based programme led by a Chartered Psychologist. It does not replace counselling or medical care, and the screening conversation exists to make sure it is the right fit.

I’m not a professional. Is this still for me?

Yes. The method does not need you to be holding a demanding career together. It needs a loss that is being carried, and a decision to stop carrying it the same way.

What if I can’t make a live session?

Sessions are recorded, so you can catch up and stay with your cohort.

How is this different from the Grief to Glow Challenge?

The Challenge is a short introduction. This is the full fifteen-week structure — every stage taught, practised and made to hold, with your progress measured throughout.

Is faith required?

No. The method draws on the documented record of King David, but no faith is required to take part.

What happens after fifteen weeks?

You leave with your playbook for the day the old pattern returns, your full Six Dials arc, and your Legacy Charter for what comes next.

The first line of the drawing

You have drawn nothing yet. That is the point.

Fifteen weeks from now you will have a drawing of who you are on the other side of this, the first walls built from it, and a record in your own numbers of what moved.
